Equivocal Balance

a rough stone braces a smooth one,

its sharp edges gripping what might otherwise slip away.

the smooth stone presses back,

its weight grounding the roughness,

its surface reflecting the softened light.

each depends on the other,

their differences merging into stability.

a leaf, brittle and veined,

clings to the surface like a fading memory.

its edges curl inward - a quiet surrender to time’s slow erosion.

a mosquito conterweighting the weight.

its lack of movement lend the stillness meaning.

it becomes part of the balance,

a fleeting counterpoint to permanence.
