From Sun to Print: Unveiling the Cyanotype Craft at the MK GAllery's ARioT Project Workshop

Last week, I enthusiastically stepped into the role of a cyanotype guide, ready to lead a captivating workshop for members of the ARioT Project. With sunlight streaming through large windows, the workshop space was filled with an air of anticipation. Eager participants gathered around, their eyes curious and hands keen to delve into the creative process.

As I shared the history and techniques of cyanotype, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the room. I tried to explain the delicate balance between chemistry and artistry, emphasizing the unique nature of this photographic printing process. Participants listened attentively as I recounted the story of Sir John Herschel's discovery, and how the cyanotype became a bridge between the scientific and artistic worlds.

Demonstrating each step meticulously, I guided the attendees through the hands-on process of coating paper with light-sensitive emulsion and arranging objects to create beautiful compositions. Conversations flowed freely as we explored the marriage of nature and chemistry, fostering a deeper understanding of the medium's potential.

As the workshop progressed, the room transformed into a hub of creativity. Laughter mingled with discussions on exposure times, and the satisfying sound of rinsing water accompanied the emergence of intricate blue-hued prints. The joy of seeing participants' faces light up as their creations developed was gratifying, a testament to the universal appeal of this age-old process.

By the end of the workshop, participants walked away with their unique cyanotype artworks and a newfound appreciation for the analogue world in a digital age. The ARioT Project's cyanotype workshop became a vibrant exploration of creativity, history, and connection, bridging the gap between the past and present through the art of light and chemistry.

A heartfelt thanks to MK Gallery and the ARioT Project for the opportunity and for providing all needed to explore the enchanting realm of cyanotype. To the participants, your curiosity and creativity breathed life into the workshop, making it a vibrant journey. A special appreciation to Ross and Amy for their invaluable support. This experience underscored the beauty of crafting with chemistry and the joy of shared artistic exploration.
